About Gregor’s Family in the Novel “Heart of Darkness”
Gregor’s family comes off as a selfish one. In other words, one can assert that they all exploited the straightforwardness and loyalty of Gregor throughout. His father is rather lazy as he spends all day reading, yet he is deeply in debt. He leaves his son Gregor to toil for a mistake that he made since Gregor is stuck in his dead-end job because of his father’s debt. His mother and his sister are also materialistic and lazy as well. They both do not find jobs when Gregor is alive and indulge themselves.
Gregory can get a cook and maid for them, while his sister, on the other hand, can get to learn the violin out of Gregor’s hard labor. None of them tells Gregor how appreciative they are of his assistance as they feel entitled to it. The insensitivity of this family is further witnessed after the family realizes that Gregor is now a bug. Instead of feeling sorry that they have lost their son, they only start thinking about how they will get money for their expenses.
His father then removes his savings to clear his debt, and one then realizes that he has been letting his son suffer in such a job, yet he was highly capable of meeting those expenses. This family does not even bother giving his son medical treatment after he succumbs to his wound, and this is what kills him. They also have misplaced priorities because instead of focusing on their family member who has been their breadwinner and supporter all along, they are easily distracted by guests who mean nothing much to them.
For instance, they chase away Gregor when the guests complain about him, and they also focus on the clerk’s worries rather than their ailing son when he comes to get Gregor for work. Gregor eventually came to the realization that he had been nothing more than a financier to his family, a fact that was crucial to the transformation in the metamorphosis.
