How Nationalism Affects Schools and Students

It can be said that nationalism would affect schools and students. Nationalism as a doctrine can be influence radicalism, which in the context of many multicultural societies, where representatives of many nationalities can be victims of such influence. It can be argued that nationalism is about loyalty to one nation. Nevertheless, loyalty to the nation and its superior value would base arguments of comparison.

The superiority of one country over the others as a developed belief resulted from nationalism in schools might affect the relationship between students on the one hand, and accordingly the relation to the society as a whole. Most modern societies consist of representatives of other nations, specifically in the United States. There in addition to a large number of an immigrant who became US citizens, there is a great number of international students who come specifically to the USA for education. In that regard, as educational institutions should not promote certain beliefs and religions, the same can be said about nationalism.

Nevertheless, it is important to study history, wherein that matter it is the responsibility for educators to examine and introduce objective materials taking all sides of the world history. Schools should promote internationalism, where the influence of a multicultural environment can be beneficial for all students. In that regard, nationalism in schools can be a factor in eliminating the factor of personal skills and abilities as a measurement of achievements reducing the importance of individual assessment. In that regard, it is not suggested that such practice might be implemented by teachers, rather than indicating that it is a slippery slope, which might be misinterpreted by some students and harm others.
