Loretta C. Ford: Gender Perspectives in Leadership

Real leadership is a talent of directing people in their activities toward the supposed way of success despite personal pretenses as for it. This simple definition of leadership as such runs the gamut of those who serve people. The question is that nursing is the subject matter in the discussion. Among the most eminent leaders (nurses) Loretta C. Ford is to be highlighted in the first rows. This woman is an applicable example of female better participation in affairs that the male part of humanity should work out and verify. Her talent runs the gamut of her work devoted to people.

Gender perspectives in leadership are, perhaps, the first thing to be mentioned to reduce all bigotries in the issue of leadership on the whole. This lesson should teach individuals to be able to combine both male and female worlds in terms of mutual success living in the society (Grossman & Valiga, 2009). Moreover, people trying to overcome somebody in his/her talents should, first of all, take a look at the way other people did it before. Here the biases of men toward women can become an obstacle. However, the brainpower will never let it be so because examples of various nurses provide the reason for what they all were doing.

Loretta C. Ford is a leader who developed nursing up to the highest level in contrast to previous times. Her movement that was initialized along with Henry Silver gave birth to the “expansion of the role of nursing” since 1965 (Houser & Player, 2004, p. 1). Her activities were condensed into three main principles which she followed, namely:

  • There is an opportunity within crisis;
  • Provide particular attitudes to nursing with a wet finger;
  • Make haste not to waste time (Houser & Player, 2004).

Loretta C. Ford made everything for nursing so that this field of activities could be one people admired and could rely on. She is an extraordinary figure in the world of nursing. She made it possible that nursing gained more gratitude on the part of the American society. She spread her influence on a newbie to develop their competencies (Finkelman & Kenner, 2009). Further still, Loretta admires her critical thinking on goals and outcomes that are applied to nursing under different circumstances (Veenema, 2007).

Looking at the example of Loretta I would like to use persuasion in that there is a way out in every situation. Thus, in my work setting, I would keep it in my mind and repeat it now and then. Moreover, a “super nurse” should have a rational arrangement of daily activities not to lag and do everything timely (Mezey & McGivern, 2003). This would give me grounds to think rationally as well as creatively over what to do primarily. In turn, such accuracy in my working schedule would make me do my job faster and effectively, so I would never waste time.

Following these principles people around would notice that it works. Everything that is done timely and in cooperation with others would characterize me, as a deserving candidate for leadership in nursing. Moreover, each time I take responsibility for others, I obtain more authority. Thus, Loretta’s principles of leadership are applicable to make me grow in terms of effective nursing.
